photoblog image The Rugged Rocks of the Bay

The Rugged Rocks of the Bay

One of the wonderful features of the landscape on Georgian Bay is its amazing rocks -- sometimes smooth as a granite countertop and sometimes rugged and jagged. This was taken on Friend Island in Pointe au Baril.

Looks like a molten volcano
Are these rocks very old?
Iain Myrans: Langton, yes, very very very old. You're actually looking at the remainder of what was once the largest mountain range in the world. Google "Canadian Shield" and you'll find a whole range of information about them. Over the millenia the mountains have eroded by ice ages and wind and rain leaving behind what we see today. In my opinon, the north-eastern shore of Georgian Bay, where this photo was taken, is one of the most beautiful pleaces in the entire world.
