Hong Kong's "Midlevels" refer to the developed area part way up the mountain. Part of the public transportation system in the city includes an escalator system (shown on the right) that extends 800 metres up the mountain. In the morning it takes people down (until 10am) from their apartments to work in the downtown financial district. In the late mornings and into the evening it runs up hill.
Being from Toronto where our transit operator, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), seems to be unable to keep its escalators running, I was shocked to find that not even a single segment in almost a kilometre of escalators was shutdown or malfunctioning.
