Making cycling safe

I was in Montreal a month ago and I was amazed by this bike lane. Toronto's Richmond Street should be rebuilt this way -- a one-way road with a full lane and buffer provided to cyclists with seperate signals. If you want to get cyclists on their bikes and out of their cars, a safe and quick set of bike 'highways' like this needs to be constructed.

This is the urban planner in me talking at this point! Even if you're not interested in that dialogue hopefully you'll still like the picture. It was a challenge to take as I was in heavy shate with a very bright background but I think it works.

This almost looks like a pre-construction drawing explaining why the bike lane should be built. Nicely done!

I agree - we certainly need more of these separate bike lanes. Safety concers while sharing the road with motor vehicles is a big reason a lot of people don't commute by bike.
Iain Myrans: Well the Metrolinx draft plan that came out today calls for a half billion for bike trails and lanes in the region. that's pretty impressive.
