Opening the Lock

Photos from the Trent Severn:
I had the opportunity to travel through the Trent Severn from Georgian Bay to Lake Simcoe at the end of September this year.  It is quite an experience and I highly recommend it as a fun and relaxing way to spend a few days if you're living in Ontario. More information on the historic waterway and canal system can be found here. The waterway is so "magnificent it has been named 'one of the finest interconnected systems of navigation in the world'. Some photos are less artistic than I usually post but they have some interesting tidbits and facts to go along with them so I figure it might be an interesting series.

About this photo:
Opening the Lock in some places along the system still requires a bit of manual labour! The lock at Port Severn (Lock 45), the Georgian Bay entrance to the system, is still operated entirely mechanically. Here, two lock operators open the south upstream gate. For a map of where this was taken click here.

It does look like hard work, but nothing too arduous thank goodness. What a lovely sunny day it is. smile
