photoblog image The News in the Snow

The News in the Snow

A mish-mash of newspaper boxes lining an intersection on Yonge Street. Most of you will know I rarely do this kind of post processing but I really liked the vividness and colours of the boxes amidst the grey, browns, and whites of wintertime Toronto. I just had to wait for a pedestrian and then snap away.

I created two versions of the image in Olympus Studio -- one in plain colour and one in black and white using a digital orange filter. I layered both versions and then masked the boxes and deleted the colour image layer leaving the black and white below.

This is absolutely fabulous, Lain, in what I'd call selective color. (In PhotoShop you convert a pic to B&W and then "erase" the parts where you want color to come through.) This was a great idea. Perfect. (Can you tell I like it!)
Iain Myrans: lol, thanks Ginnie. I appreciate the comment. I very rarely engage in this type of post work. Usually I limit what I photoshop to curves and crops but this was fun.

Well without the selective colouring I would have thought the man was the subject in the shot smile Great execution here Iain.
Nicely done.. The newspaper boxes in Toronto really do add a splash of colour to the otherwise greyness we have right now, it's kinda nice, in that 'hey lets just slap these here and hope no one notices too much' kinda way..

Iain Myrans: Yea, but they're really ugly otherwise. They're always scattered around and so many of them. They do brighten it up in winter when things turn grey-brown.

Now that's excellent selective colouring, it really is fabulous.
