I like both the shots, but I'm a little biased towards horizontal crops... so, the previous one for me tongue the texture's pretty neat.
hmm they are both good and i like your tight crop. but yes i prefer the b&w one as well. it gives it a more gritty look for the subject.

They're completely different pictures, so it's hard to compare them.

This one tells more about what is in the picture and is softer, I don't mean in focus, but in the feel of the picture.
The b/w which is much closer to cogs is more punchy and harsh, with the edge of the cogs coming right out of the picture.
