I took my camera out and walked around the city for Nuit Blanche 2008 in Toronto. Nuit Blanche is an "all night contemporary art thing" (as it is billed) that is in its third year in Toronto. Because it involves walking all over the city I didn't want to drag along a tripod so I was a bit limited in the dark but I got a few interesting shots. I did this with Shannon last year. Shannon, if you're reading this I hope you're doing well over there in Korea. It was, of course, not the same without you. Top Left: An exhibit featuring 64-channels of independant audio. Each speaker produces a different sound. Standing in the middle gives you an overwhelming mashup of sound but moving near each individual speaker reveals a unique sound -- a type writer 'clack' or cash register 'ching'. Top Left: This exhibit was in one of the provincial government buildings. Apparently some of it fell down when someone tried pulling out a book. It was slated to have a rooftop and be almost twice as high but between vandals and time constraints I gather it never happened. It was still neat. Bottm Left: One of the coolest things I saw. Students of OCAD, the Ontario College of Art and Design, created this shadow light show. The 'rider' peddles a bike (behind the green lens flare) and their shadow is cast on the wall, blocking the orange light. Whe the peddles on the bike are turned it moves horse cut outs quickly through the light box on the left edge of the photo creating an animation of a horse racing on the wall. With the shadow and the projection lined up the results were really great! Bottom Left: An interesting light and fog exhibit at 'Lake Devo', a man-made pond at Ryerson University. Hundreds of rubber ducks were out for a swim.

So you sailed away Into a grey sky morning Now I'm here to stay Nothing's quite the same now I just say your name now But it's not so bad You're only the best I ever had You don't want me back You're just the best I ever had So you stole my world Now I'm just a phony Remembering the girl Leaves me down and lonely Send it in a letter Make yourself feel better But it's not so bad You're only the best I ever had You don't need me back You're just the best I ever had And it may take some time to Patch me up inside But I can't take it so I Run away and hide And I may find in time that You were always right You're always right So you sailed away Into a grey sky morning Now I'm here to stay The best I ever had The best I ever Song lyrics by Vertical Horizon

In a very rare occurrence, I am posting a black and white photo! The contrast was so extreme in this shot that I thought BandW was certainly the way to present it. This is another photo in my series of photos from the Royal Canadian Exhibition Fair taken at the end of August. If you look closely you'll see the swing trails. I was in Montreal a month ago and I was amazed by this bike lane. Toronto's Richmond Street should be rebuilt this way -- a one-way road with a full lane and buffer provided to cyclists with seperate signals. If you want to get cyclists on their bikes and out of their cars, a safe and quick set of bike 'highways' like this needs to be constructed. This is the urban planner in me talking at this point! Even if you're not interested in that dialogue hopefully you'll still like the picture. It was a challenge to take as I was in heavy shate with a very bright background but I think it works.
